As we explained in our Friday Evening blog, we’re anticipating the release of the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro in Apple’s “Hi, Speed’’ event that is being held in Apple Park tomorrow. However, there is expected to be 4 new iPhone models being released before the year is out. We’re expecting big changes including a change of model! This would be the first change to the iPhone model since the iPhone X in 2017. We’re anticipating 4 new models of iPhone all with different sized screens including 5.4, 6.7 and two phones with 6.1-inch screen. All of the iPhone’s that are supposedly being released this year are expected to include OLED Super Retina XDR display technology. There was whispers that the iPhone 12 Pro model would support 120Hz refresh rates, however, this feature is supposed to be released in 2021.

Potential Name of the iPhone

The naming of the iPhone has always been confusing ever since the iPhone 8 was released together with the iPhone X back in 2017. Before we had seen the iPhone 5s, 6 Plus & the 3GS, but never the iPhone X. This was because it was a completely new iPhone model, the name stood out from the rest of the model that had been before. We had not seen the confusing naming end, when in 2018 Apple brought out the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. The names of the iPhone got a little less confusing last year when they released the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Max. In previous years we have seen Apple release an iPhone ‘S’ model, however, because of the radical changes we probably won’t see an 12S this year. We’re expected the 4 models to be named iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 12 Max.

Design of The Models

We’re likely to see a complete overhaul on the design of the models which could include a metal frame, which we saw on the iPhone 4. An insider from Apple has explained that the new models will use a more multifaceted segmentation design, which includes a brand-new injection moulding design. The general design of the models will be similar to the iPad Pro & iPhone 4 with square edged stainless-steel or aluminium frame, fitted between two pieces of glass. Apple is rumoured to be bringing out a new Ceramic Shield glass screen that is more resistant to drops and scratches. Here are some of the tweaks that Apple may make on the iPhone 12 design.

  • A somewhat lower power button on the phone
  • A larger camera lenses on all of the models
  • Wider Antenna Lines at the side of the iPhone for 5G.

Camera Quality

The word on the street is that the new iPhone will include a 3D camera which is powered by laser. This modern technology uses a laser to understand the depth for objects in the room or facility. This will massively improve the iPhone’s photography; it could also see an introduction of portrait mode for video.

Colours Available

We have seen various rumours about the colours that are available for the iPhone 12. This is a strong report that the iPhone 12 Pro model will be available in a Navy-Blue finish, which replaces the Midnight Green which was obtainable as an option for the iPhone 11 Pro. This will likely be the same shade of blue as the new Blue Apple Watch Series 6. The other colours available for the iPhone 12 Pro will include: silver, gold and graphite. The iPhone 12 will be available in black, white, blue, green and red.

Battery Space

The upcoming iPhones could have larger battery capacity as the technology giants are working on a new battery protection module that’s half the size of the current iPhone batteries. This should free some valuable space in the upcoming iPhones. As the 5G components that are bring used in the iPhone 12 are so highly-priced, Apple are trying to cut costs in other areas of the phone. They’re revamping the battery is a smaller and simpler battery board design, which is also much cheaper than the current iPhone 11 battery.

5G Connectivity

Apple plans to go back to the Qualcomm modem chips instead of the current Intel chips, utilising Qualcomm’s 5G technology in the upcoming iPhone models. The two have come along way from their bitter legal battle, however, they settled their differences back in 2019. It is rumoured that the iPhone 12 models will include a Smart Data. This will switch your data between 4G and 5G depending on the bandwidth available.
